Why won't my HEIC photos open?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC ("High Efficiency Image Container") by default. It's a great format — roughly half the file size of JPG at the same quality — but support outside Apple devices is patchy: older Windows versions need a paid codec, many websites and upload forms reject it, and most printing kiosks don't read it.
Converting to JPG solves this instantly: JPG opens everywhere. If you're posting to the web, WebP gives you smaller files with the same universal browser support; choose PNG only if you need lossless quality.
