How to make an image background transparent
A transparent background lets your subject sit on any color or design without an ugly box around it — essential for logos, stickers, product shots and overlays. Here's how to create one and save it so the transparency actually sticks.
"Transparent" means the background is empty rather than white — usually shown as a grey checkerboard in editors. The key detail most people miss is the export format: only formats that support transparency (like PNG) can keep it.
Step by step
- Open your image in the PixPolish editor.
- Remove the background. The fastest way is the ✨ Remove background button (bottom left) — it cuts out your subject with one click and leaves the rest transparent. For fine control, you can also use the eraser to remove areas by hand. See our background removal guide for details.
- Check the edges. Zoom in and tidy up any leftover pixels with the eraser so the cut-out looks clean.
- Export as PNG. Open File → Save/Export and choose PNG. This is the step that preserves transparency.
The #1 mistake to avoid
If you export as JPG, the transparent area gets filled with a solid color (usually white) — because JPG simply can't store transparency. Always save transparent images as PNG (or WebP). If your "transparent" image keeps showing a white box, this is almost always why.
