How to remove a background from an image (free, no upload)

You can cut the background out of a photo in a single click — no design skills, no subscription, and without uploading your picture anywhere. Here's how to do it in PixPolish, straight from your browser.

Removing a background is one of the most common photo edits: you need a clean cut-out of a person or product to drop onto a new backdrop, a plain white background for a store listing, or a transparent PNG for a logo. Traditionally that meant tedious manual selection or a paid online tool that uploads your photo to its servers. PixPolish does it locally, on your own device, using a small AI model that runs inside the browser.

Step by step

1. Open your photo. Go to the PixPolish editor and drag your image onto the page, or click Open from computer. Photos with a clear subject — a person, a product, an animal — work best.
2. Click "✨ Remove background." You'll find the button at the bottom left of the editor. The first time you use it, the AI model loads (a few seconds); after that it's quick.
3. Let it process. PixPolish analyses the image and adds the cut-out as a new layer, automatically hiding the original underneath. Your subject now sits on a transparent background.
4. Fine-tune by hand (optional). Because the result is a real layer, you can zoom in and use the eraser or brush to clean up stray edges — perfect for wispy hair or thin objects the AI wasn't sure about.
5. Export. Choose File → Save/Export and pick PNG to keep the transparency. (JPG can't store transparency, so it would fill the empty area with white.)

Tips for a cleaner cut-out

• Good contrast helps. A subject that stands out clearly from the background gives the AI an easier job.
• Higher resolution, better edges. A larger, sharper photo produces crisper edges than a tiny, blurry one.
• Touch up, don't restart. If a small area is wrong, erase or paint it on the cut-out layer rather than redoing the whole thing.
• Want a colored backdrop? Add a new layer below the cut-out and fill it with any color, or drop in a different background image.
