How to blur part of a photo

Need to hide a face, a license plate, a house number or something private in the background before you post a picture? Blurring just that area is quick — and with PixPolish it happens entirely on your own device.

The idea is simple: isolate the area you want to hide, then apply a blur strong enough that the detail can't be read. Doing it on a separate layer keeps the rest of the photo sharp.

When you'd want to do this

You've taken a great photo — but there's something in it that shouldn't go online. The most common cases: bystanders' faces in street, event or school photos (in many places, posting someone's recognizable face without consent is a real problem); a license plate when selling your car; house numbers, name tags, or delivery labels; and screenshots that show an email address, account number, order ID or chat name. In every one of these, you want the rest of the image untouched and just one region unreadable.

Step by step in the PixPolish editor

Open the photo in the PixPolish editor — or use the Blur / hide shortcut on the home screen's quick-edit menu, which opens your photo with the right tool already selected.
Select the area to hide. Use a selection tool to draw around the face, plate, or detail you want to obscure.
Apply a blur. Open the blur filter (under Effects) and increase the strength until the detail is completely unreadable — for privacy, err on the side of too much rather than too little.
Repeat for any other areas that need hiding.

For real privacy, blur hard

Important: a light blur can sometimes be partially reversed by software — researchers have reconstructed weakly-blurred text and even faces. If you're hiding something genuinely sensitive — a full face, an ID number, an address — use a very strong blur, or better yet, cover it with a solid filled shape so there's no underlying detail left at all.

Alternative: cover instead of blur

For the strongest protection, add a new layer and draw a solid rectangle (a "black box") over the sensitive area. Unlike a blur, a solid fill removes the information completely — there's nothing underneath to recover. This is the safest choice for things like documents and ID cards. One more caution: hide information before you post, not by editing the post later — once an unedited version has been online, assume it was saved.
